Dr V N Shrikhande

Dr Vinayak N. Shrikhande, one of the pioneers in gastrointestinal surgery in India, was born in 1931 in Kolhapur. He obtained an M.B.B.S (Bombay) in 1953. He had the rare distinction of obtaining F.R.C.S. in England and Edinburgh at the first attempt in 1959. On returning to India, he played an important role in the Family Planning Programme, by his work on reversing birth control surgery in men, which was recognised all over the world. He was the former Professor of Surgery at Grant Medical College, Mumbai, and later on Professor and Head of Department of General Surgery, Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences. He was the first president of the Indian Chapter of the International Hepato Pancreato Biliary Association. Though he was based in Mumbai, he went to smaller towns to train surgeons so that patients could get better treatment near their homes. He established Shrikhande Clinic in 1977, in Mumbai, which has become a training centre in gastrointestinal surgery for young surgeons and observers from all over the country and abroad. He was invited to operate on the President of India, Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, at the Army Hospital, New Delhi, in April 1994. Known as an inspiring teacher, students flocked around him and it is no surprise that he has trained more than 250 surgeons in the last 40 years, some of whom continue to carry out the excellent traditions of surgery. He is a much sought after speaker at various medical conferences all over the country
